Default Further question. . .

Mornin' Audiphiles (and you, especially Jim!),
Gettin' ready to place a used parts order with Shokan and am also wondering: Is that the fuel filter nestled in next to to the fuel tank, vertically mounted, on the passenger side???? Man things are TIGHT on this car and I thought they were tight on my A6! Anybody know the part number of this?

AutohausAZ shows two of 'em with two different sized entry/exit ports. Any idea which one this particular car takes, given its location? I could get underneath there and pull the thing but then it disables the car until I get the fuel filter. Thoughts gang? Thanks. . .

Had to "modify" the exhaust hanging system as one of mounting bolts that attaches to the rear differential was sheared flush, the victim of corrosion/electrolysis between aluminum and steel, and I was unable to extract the stub. So, I simply cut the one half of the exhaust side of the bracket (it was rattling badly against the differential and the mounting is now a single bolt unit! There's additional mountings on the system, of course.

Next, read the check engine codes: Likely O2 Sensors but the previous ownes tells me he replace the Cats with non-CA aftermarket units and may have broken/disconnected the 02 Sensor wires to those units. Stand by. . . I may just replace the exhaust manifold units like I did on my A6, which solved the problem for that car.

Lastly, any creative thoughts on retrieving the radio security code, apart from contacting my local dealer? Think it cost me $25.00 last time. . .Kinda pricey, as usual!

The dealer is prolly the only place to find the radio code..

As for the filter: can you measure its length/width while in the car? Kinda makes me feel better about the '96s having it in the engine bay

Nice car though..

Default Audi Dealer Blues

Just called the local Audi dealer to price out the retrieval of the radio security code: $62.00, drive the car in, they pull the radio and extract the serial number, e-mail that off to the factory and then it all comes back to you! Can't retrieve it via the VIN. . . What a "**** and bull story!" Well, I'm stuck so I'll pay my dues to the dealer gods! They all get us sooner or later. . .

Say, what 02 sensors do you like out there? There's the OEM Bosch, 3-wire, and then there's a more generic/far less expensive, splice yourself 02 sensors.

Use the Bosch.. those spliced ones never seemed to do me good..

Why not just put in another CD player?

Default Thank you!

Hey Jim!
Thanks for your recommendations regarding the O2 sensors and I'll do just that despite the higher cost. . .

As for the radio, the car already has the CD changer in the trunk though it's missing the disc carousel holder/cassette, and it should all work fine. Cost is another factor for now but I'll probably install a better head unit "down the road," so to speak.

Say, I've got a very noisy rear suspension and would further welcome your thoughts on this. Thought it was a loose exhaust system but having addressed this, I've placed the car back on its own wheels and the rear-end noise persists. Sounds like a very squeaky joint back there and this car has a pretty sophisticated rear suspension system. Any thoughts on common problems/issues with this vintage of car? Struts are dry (no leakage) and seem to work okay, and the coil springs are in tact. . .

Thanks again!

It was a bit wet 'round there even though the original o-ring seemed soft still. New one in and we're happy!

Say, you guys concern me 'bout your casual attitude regarding those belly pans. They're absolutely essential to keeping the car glued down over 120 m.p.h. so be careful out there if you've tossed yours!

Once again, could've never done this job without AudiForums and the expert/experienced/wise counsel of many, especially Jim!

Makes me want to go find another one of these at a basement price and rebuild it!!!! Not!!!!!!
No need to spray the insert orange. Some of the missing bulbs are not used in US cars, so they are not really missing.

You just gonna have to take a close look at the control arm bushings.. It could also be the upper strut bushing/mounting plate.. does this car have a rear sway bar?

If your just pushing on the rear with the car parked and it makes a squeak noise, I'd look at the control arms. You could also jack the car up to remove most of the weight off the rear and do a 'push/pull/tug' test to see if any of the arms/bushings move.. you'll need two people.

If it 'clunks' while driving over bumps, look at the strut.

This is one of those things that really cant be diagnosed over the net

Thumbs up Further gratitude

Thanks for the input, Jim! Seems like the squeak has reportedly disappeared with an thorough undercarriage cleaning and simple use. The car sat for almost 6 months and is now being driven by my son regularly. He drove it to the local Audi Dealer for the radio code retrieval, expecting to pay $62.00, the quote for the job. He ended up giving the service guy $30.00 who actually did it for free, a gesture of benevolence, to be sure. Radio works and we just reinstalled the factor 6-disc CD changer, which lead to his going back to the dealer to retrieve a new CD holder/caroselle. Brought that home, ($27.00) only to discover it's the wrong size- too thick! Back to the dealer we go and we're going to see if we can purchase a replacement driver's side-view mirror glass as well. That unit pops right off of the mirror and is held in place by a kind of ball-and-socket arrangement. Hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The side-view mirror on this car and my A6 for that matter, are stained within their laminations. Not so with the passenger mirrors, for some reason. Shokan doesn't sell them- they'll understandably only sell the entire side-view mirror unit- more money for them. Stand by. . .Car seems to be running sweetly. I'll need to change out that oil filter housing o-ring one of these days. . .

Default Further update

Yea, he's a good guy, Jim, and thanks for the thought! Bushings all quiet and have reordered the correct CD Magazine and a new Driver's sideview mirror, all pricey, of course. Car got detailed yesterday and he and his mom removed ALL the lousy window tinting that was on the indisde of the windows. Would love to upload a few pics but apparently they're too much memory for the site. . .
