Hi guys!! Current owner of a 2000 A4 avant 2.8.Im looking to upsize to a 2001a6 4.2. I was wondering what to look out for. Any bad years or quircks to know about? I recently did my own TB job and was succesfull. Is the A6 similiar to work on? This forum got me through all my A4 projects so im gratefull for all your opinions!!!!

 

Watch out for the tranny's and front control arms......they are both weak spots. I'd look at the 03+ if it was me. Also according to the service dept at the stealership, the timing chain should be replaced at 60k miles....that's about a $2500 in parts and laborunless you have the skill/tools/garage to do it yourself- something you have to drop/pull the engine for. On the other hand if money is no object then GO FOR IT!!!

Have you looked at the S4/S6 from say 99-03? That may be an option as well.

Is the 4.2 a timing belt or chain? Cmon anyother major issues?

 

ok ok.....so it's a belt not a chain. The point is (according to the stealership) it's 2500 to replace it. Better?

 

400 for a timing belt kit give or take
800-1400 to replace timing belt (special tools ect bs they charger you for)
Fron CV boots go out (270)
Tie rods
If it is a older modle with a Boshe mass air flow you may have some problems
I would watch the tranny if it is an auto... if manual check clutch ect.
I would have the car checked by a audi dealer and get a good pretty long warranty on the car. I missed warranty by 1 week with blow turbos. That is a whole new issue but def get the warranty. I think you would love the 4.2 from text driving it. Has the great a6 feel and the raw power when needed. Good luck with your car

 

thanks guys, its an o1 with 73K, i would be doing the TB myself and hopefully save some money. Does the 4.2 use the same 5 speed tip as my 2.8?

I am an automatic kinda guy trust me... but I would look into getting the 6 speed :-X I even think this could save highway mpg. The 5 speed sits at 2.5-3rpms (turbos spooling.... rpms will just be high in the 4.2) when going 70-80 mph. I could only believe the 6 speed would be in the lower rpm and get better mpg. Don't get me wrong though audichick, I love my tiptronic/auto 5 speed. Hope this helps and ask away
