AC blows warm on driver side (2000 4.2)
I have a 2000 A6 4.2. The AC blows cold out the passenger side vents, but blows only slightly cooled on the drivers side. The dealer did what diagnostics he could and said they couldn't learn more without taking off the dashboard, which was going to cost about $1000 in labor. I decided to pass on that for now, and am trying to decide what to do.
He said most likely a flap was malfunctioning, and not providing right mix of warm/cold air. He said there was a chance they would need to replace the entire evaporator? assembly, as audi does not provide individual parts. This could put the total repair cost at around $3800.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? If there was a good chance they would find something cheap to fix once pulling the dash, I think I would go ahead with that. The central LED display on instrumental panel is also starting to fade, and I could have it replaced at the same time to help amortize the cost of the dash removal.

Passenger side feels plenty cold. I think mechanic said it was 40-some degrees, versus around 70 on driver side. They said the freon was fine. This was with outdoor temp around 80. It seems like some cooled air is being routed toward driver, but mixed with a lot of warm. If I drive with recirculate on, I can maintain a just barely tolerable temperature when 90's outside.

Sounds like something is blocking the cool air to the drivers side. Like a blend door not being in the right place. Check for faults in the ac control head. You probably have a bad blend door control motor.
