Air Filters ......
ok...he compaired 1 high air flow (the K&N) filter, to 3 or 4 other just regular stock replacement filters.... i dont get what he was trying to do or prove...nor do i see the validity in the light test...the k&n is a high air flow filter, its going to let more air in, and if that means it lets a little extra dirt in then ok...? ppl have been using k&n for years, and i have yet to hear of something going wrong in a car bc of a air filter...unless they didnt have 1 installed at all...also, they dont market the k&n filters as stopping more dust particles or whatever, they market it as letting more air in...and thats exactly what it does lol, if u want less air flow, and less dust, then go with the stock replacements by FRAM and all them lol
Well I have mixed feelings about K&N filter. There is no doubt that K&N filter increases air volumn... on paper... In reality does it make any noticible difference to stock or slightly modified cars? From my experience, I say no. I had one on my old Honda, which used MAP instead of MAF. So I didn't have to worry about getting MAF dirty and etc. But anyways, there was no noticible difference in performance, nor mileage.
Since then I had one on my A6. Once again, no noticible difference... Also I was a bit skeptical about MAF getting caked up with oil and stuff. One final blow to K&N was that when I took the filter out after about 500 miles to check, I noticed dust pattern around the sealing edges. I was willing to live with added dust from the filter media itself, but not more from leaking edges. First I thought it was just my filter unit, but after talking to many people, they seem to say the same.
Don't get me wrong. For race application, I would definitely use one, because it does provide better flow. But for a standard everyday application, especially with a hot wire MAF in A6, I decided to not use it.
BTW, I have one with 500 miles on it, if anyone wants to send me $20. Shipping included.

K&N filters works well, but don't expect to feel performance increase... otherwise you'll be disappointed. If you clean it well with little oil, clean any excess off then you'll have no issues with MAF. It'll be the last filter you use. Have had one with no issues.
so here;s a dumb question let's say I take out the air filter out all together. Now this is going to sound REALLY stupid but Im teaching myself about cars....... the air is going where. Into the manifold for direct combustion? I mean without the air filter is it just a direct vent to the internal components of my engine to whatever foreign materials make it in there ? I understand that combustion needs air, spark fuel... hence energy ..... this is (the filter), I'm assuming the direct source of that air hence the performance changes upon air flow ?
