Hmm that kinda sounds dirty if you read it very fast and out loud....
"Its the VAG leather baby! "
*chuckle*
Ok, that's pretty damned good.
As for the oil smell.....I second whomever said the cam seals. My SO's 99 A4 had a little bit of that oil smell to it as well, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Did the timing belt over thanksgiving....and sure enough, the left cam seal was leaking, dripping behind all of the covers and eventually ending up on the exhaust. It was a really slow leak, just a thin ribbion of oil, but certainly enough to smell up the car.
Of course, getting that seal out was fun, too.

Ever find the problem? Mine does this too. When i get on the engine fairly hard I can always smell a hot oil smell when i exit the car. I dont smell it inside though. I took it to the dealer and he replaced a seal but I dont know which one. After about 2 weeks the smell wasnt going away. He told me it was because they didnt clean the engine right so this time they would. The smell disapated some and isnt that bad when i drive the car normal, but I can still smell it whenever I get on the rpms. I too thought it was an Audi thing since the dealer said everything was fine. I dont lose oil, I have no drips, I dont know. 03 2.7T
I don't know about the other two engines but on the 2.8 at least this is a common problem. There is a vacuum check valve (some call it a vacuum pump but its just a one way valve) on the backside of the intake manifold. When this valve fails or blocks with oil the pressure will get too high and blow the cam seals. This makes a little leak onto the exhaust manifold and then a oil burning smell.
I just bought my '00 A6 2.8 and it had this exact problem. Slight oil burning smell when I get on the rpms. I just replaced this check valve and the smell is gone. Usually though you would have to replace both this valve and the seals. My leak just happened to be so mild that the seals weren't actually damaged.
I just looked up the part and found that it does exist on the 4.2 but I couldn't find any mention of it on the 2.7. Looks like this. Take a look at your engine on the backside and see if you can find it.
