Default auxillary fan

can anyone tell me when the 2nd radiator fan on the 96 A6 is activated?. coz mine has never come on yet since i had the car. the A/C shares the one working fan . the cars heat has never gone over half, so maby it comes on just before the motor overheats????

It has two fans. The main one (closest to the windshield tank) is controlled by the temperature sender. The sender has 3 pins - the first one controls low speed and enables around 80 celcius, the second pin controls high speed and is enabled on 90. This is completely independent system from A/C.

A/C fan should always start if you press A/C button and the A/C starts cooling. If you switch it off - then fan goes off. To test it I would first read errors from climate control unit (press Up and Recircullate), read errors displayed on channel 0 and browse internet for descriptions.

To test the fan engine you may give it +12 from the battery or try to enable the fan using VagCOM.

hi, thx for the input. the A/C does put the fan on right away when you switch it on and goes off after about5 seconds when its switched off. and the heat does switch the fan on at 2 different speeds but only the fan on the airbox side. i think i should just giv it 12v direct and see if it comes on...

hey., which fan did you replace, the one on the winshield water side, on the left? , im thinking of just putting a bypass switch in to manually activate it from inside on hot days. nice mini by the way.!

To FALCOR; if you decide to do the switch thing - do not forget to put an electrical relay there. Battery -> switch -> fun will kill you switch

Yes the one on the left...and it still does not work even if you turn the AC on. I am thiking it might be the Aux fan switch? But, I have no idea where inside the car it is and how to switch it out. Anyone know this??

And thank you about the Mini

Hi! I'm not completely sure for this model, but on mine audi 100 when I connect to A/C head with VagCOM there are testing procedures there. Under VagCOM there are commands to test air flow flaps, heater motor etc. Potentially there could be menus to test the fan. At least you could read errors (e.g. mine displays low voltage/shortcut if I disconnect fan).
