Default On-Board maintenance counter

Hi All,

Got a question about the maintenance counter on my 2004 A6. I noticed that it does not seem to be "counting down" to my next maintenance. It said maintenance due in 5500km. Then I went to a road trip totaling 1200km. I checked after the trip and the counter is still at 5500km. I’m pretty sure that the 2004 models maintenance intervals are 15,000km or once a year, whichever comes first. Should I trust the on-board maintenance counter or just schedule based on my own calculations of time/kms driven? I’m thinking the counter takes into account time passed as well because I bought the car with 65,000km on it in January and its certified so the latest maintenance was done when the dealer received it. It sat on the lot for 3 months or so before I bought it (so the last maintenance was done in October) and I have only added 5000km since. So I would think the counter, if only based on kms driven, should say 10,000km until next service, but it says 5500. Can anyone shed some light on what the on-board computer uses to calculate the next service and should I trust it or just ignore it and schedule maintenance based on the 15,000km or once a year interval?

Thanks!

I use the sticker in the window deal and a white board in the shop.
