Default brake and abs light flashing

My 99A6 2.8 quattro has 103k miles. I does not get driven that much. About a month ago the brake pad warning light came on. I checked all the pads and the have plenty of life left. In the last couple of days the brake abd abs light have been flashing and then they go off.
Does any one had this problem before and what was the fix for it ?Is it one of those Audi bugs that drive owners crazy ? I know that on domestic cars when the hub goes, the ABS light comes on.
