BUYING 2.7T BLOWN UP, ADVICE
I am an assistant parts manager at vw dealer, so i am not real familiar with some of audi's motors. I am buying a 2001 a6 2.7t with a bad motor. What commonly goes wrong with them? For some reason the seller thinks it spun a rod bearing. Advice?

Do you know what is "blown" on it? Most of the time it's just bad turbo's. Since the motor needs to be pulled to replace them, it's expensive.
I have never really herd of the TB jumping timing, just breaking, that's usually from people not changing it.

IT could be a blown motor. I have seen some stock motors throw rods over the past few years. But it is more than likely to be a timing belt issue or as 2k said a turbo. Either one will be several thousand dollars in repairs so make sure you are getting about 4 to 5 thousand under list. Because even if you do find that the turbo is bad there are still several things you would need to do. Such as the timing belt and other maintince that goes with the car. That in it self can be another 5 to 800 dollars.
one good way to check is to plug in a vag com and see what comes up. That will help point you in a good direction. It wont really tell you if you have a blown motor but it will give you a glance at the last condition of the car

I'm not sure what you mean by a "timing jump". Since it's a belt, it's unlikely to skip a tooth. If it did, it's potentially as bad as breaking.
If the belt snapped, the car will not run. And since it is an interference engine (pistons and valves occupy the same space at different times, of course), it is likely you damaged parts. For the common man - one without access to discount parts and labor - this could be a few $000 repair bill.
If it's the turbos, you're also in the $3000 repair range to replace with OEM. Of course, for $5-8k you can go K04s and add a lot more horsepower. (So I have been told.) I don't have confidence that the turbos can be replaced without pulling the engine as only one person claims to have done it and my indie shop has told me it's a lot of work to get at the turbos and the engine has to be pulled.
