Car 'hesitates' under acceleration
Hello,
I have a '99 A6 Quattro 2.8l with about 115k miles. It's doing something which is hard to describe, the closest word I can think of is 'hesitate'. It happens under light acceleration (at 1k-2k rpm), but not at idle or at high speed/power. It happens for a split second at a time, and feels like the car loses power for that split second. Overall the car performs as well as it did before. The MIL does not come on.
Firstly, I have read about people scanning the OBD codes but I'm not seeing the MIL. Does that mean there's no codes to scan?
Advice?
Thanks
Tim

there could be an issue that would throw a code but it hasnt been "wrong" for long enough for the computer to deem it so.
it sounds like it could be an o2 sensor, i had a similar problem with my last car but didnt know until it was inspection time and i failed (CEL was burnt out before i bought the car).

in all fairness this could be ANYTHING as we have so little information . \in situations like this it is always good to start with the basics. Change the plugs , air filter and fuel filter and go from there. Also if your not using high quality gas throw in some techron and see how she performs.
Also do you know if your coils have been replaced under the recall ?

Today it started happening while idling. Does that change anything? It's still just an infrequent, short hesitation, like a hiccup, no sustained vibration.
So to be clear, if I go buy the OBD scanner it might not be a waste of money?
I checked the audiusa.com website for recalls and it said the VIN "is not recognized or has no recall/campaign associated with it".
Also there's no coil recall listed on:

you dont have much info posted but i would try an injector cleaner such as Lucas Fuel Cleaner -- if you arent seeing a check engine light and you are having a rough idle there is a good chance there is buildup around your injectors -- it could be something else but this is one of the cheapest easiest things to try first and there is not really a downside, it wont hurt your car
