CEL-LY Question
On my Audi Quattro A6 '99 2.8L ...my check engine light kicked on a few weeks ago. I went to have the codes checked at a local indy shop and nothing registered. I was told that my spark plugs & wires need replaced, andthey asked if I had a recent jump to my battery, but nothing else could be found???They reset the CEL and it didn't kick back on for about a week later.Okay, so I replaced the plugs and the wires looked fine, got a new K&N air filter and she runs like new...but how do I reset the CEL to turn it off.
By the way, new battery replacedin 2007, I had a direct fit OEM equiv. left side cat replaced in Nov. 07 and CV boots replaced in Mar. 08...but I doubt if either relates to the CEL. Does the CEL just lights up without producing codes after a certain age???

That's what I thought. I also went to a local autozone and they gave me the same response. At Autozone, no codes, and he said that this usually occurs if the gas cap is not tightened or something like that. I want to reset the CEL and do some more checks n balances before going to an Audi dealer...ugh! Do you know how to reset the CEL?
You need to get a hand held unit.... But even with turning off the CEL the car is to smart. Your car will jump quicker and quicker into the CEL with limp mode. You should really just go too an audi place because I found just removing CEL's have gotten me in more trouble than good.
Are you saying that you have theCEL on but no code shown? That is strange...
Anyways, you need a OBDII scan tool or VAGcom scanner to reset, like everyone else has mentioned here.

I suspect there is a code that the readers your using isn't seeing.
The best money I spent on my Audi was a VagCom cable so I could use the freebee RossTech program to see the cause of the light. It makes decisions easier and saved me hundreds of $$$. The reset feature is also good because it can clear the intermittent codes that an Audi likes to tease you with -- if the problem is big the light will just come back on when yoiu start the car.

www.ross-tech.com for the vag cable, and the best cable you can buy IMO.
You can take your chances on an E-Bay cable, but i wouldn't.
