Coolant overflow

Coolant overflow
Hello Audiforum members,
I have a 1997 Audi A6 Quatro Wagon with a 2.8L engine and 92K miles on the odometer.
I am trying to diagnose why it recently overheated.
The timing belt, water pump and thermostat, were all replaced at 72K miles. The cooling system was flushed and new G11 coolant added at 91K miles. Both radiator cooling fans function when the AC is activated.
My sister was the only occupant in the car at the time it overheated as she pulled into her school parking lot. By the time I arrived, the engine had cooled and it did not over heat again on the way home. The car has been driven several times again in an attempt to duplicate the problem, bit it will not over heat. Although, I notice the fans do not activate unless the AC is turned on.
Can you please help me locate, so I may test and trouble shoot, any, fuses, sensors and controllers that should be triggering the cooling fans when the temperature goes above normal.
Steps I have taken:
1 - Filled the coolant reservoir with a 50/50 mixture of G11 coolant.
2 - Checked for fan fuses in the hidden fuse box, under the steering wheel, but no fan fuse is indicated there (remember, I have a 1997 A6 c4, not a 1998 A6 c5)
Thank you, any info is appreciated.

It got hot enough for coolant to run like a river below my car. I got a call from my sister saying " there is steam coming from the hood and there is pink fluid under the car ".
Where would the coolant tempature sensor be located?

The fans function when A/C is activated to aid with condenser airflow. Don't assume everything is ok if they're coming on for the A/C.
Since they're working, you can eliminate bad wiring, bad fan motor(s), and/or relay.
You probably have either (as Beau already said) the coolant temp sensor or the radiator fan sensor/switch on its way out, or (as Jack already said) a sticky T-stat.
The fact that it was replaced 20k miles back doesn't necessarily guarantee it is still functioning properly.
