cruise control on my 2.8 A6 stoped functioning, actually, it was working sometimes, like out of every 10 try onlyone was "lucky". Maybe it needs adjustment.

Hi, I just had the same issue on my '99 Avant and it wasthe cruise control module. It cost about $500.00 for parts and labor here in Northern Virginia! I had the exact same issue with my '89 Mercedes and it was the module for that too. They apparently use the exact same system.

 

Vag it & see if there is a stored code. The switch on the stock can also wear out, if so you will see an interminitant switch fault.

 

I have heard of simple fixes, such as the can of air you use to clean keyboards and electronics working on the switch. My personal experience, though, 1997 A6 Avant, was to have the cruise control module rebuilt. I used this company in FLwww.autoecu.com and have not had any problems from them or their work. They also rebuilt my wife's ABS control module out of her SAAB. Really inexpensive, I think about $100 with the overnight shipping. On my car, the cruise control module was easy to access; just remove the glove compartment door and it was right up there. All in all about a 4 day process.
