DIY Turbo Install ?
Hey,
My friend has a blown K04 on his 2001 A6 and has to get it removed which he said was complicated, something I've heard before. However I wanted to see exactly how complicated and was wondering if anybody out there had a step by step thread or a guide posted somewhere. I have done all the labor to my cars except for welding or internals and, to me, removing turbos should be a DIY sort of thing and I'd hate to see him spend so much money on simple removal but I'm used to an STi, not a twin turbo.
Thanks

Well, I'm no expert, but have had lots of time to read up on this issue since buying my A6 2.7T. From what I have gathered, removing the turbos is easy. Removing the engine from the car so you can get at the turbos is the difficult part!
Audi uses a special jig that holds the entire front clip in alignment while it is removed from the main body of the car. The turbos can not be reached w/o taking the entire engine/sub frame out. The only way it may be doable ,after asking an cert. audi mechanic, is to unbolt everything and drop the eng etc onto jack stands, then raise the body up high enough to allow you to work on the turbos without moving the engine. He says even then it will be hard to get it all back in place after... He has been an Audi dealership mech for many years and is doubtful he could do it at his home shop. He showed me some pictures he took of him doing a 2.7 turbo job, I don't see how it could be done shadetree style...
