ECT Sensor Issue - 2004 a6 2.7t
Hello all!
I have a 2004 a6, with 45,000 miles on it. I recently started getting a check engine light (cel), so I popped a code scanner on, and it showed a
p3081, which pointed to a mass air flow sensor (MAF). I replaced it, then went back to the auto parts store to borrow the scanner and clear the cel. It came up with another code, this time a p0118, which points me to the engine coolant temp (ect) sensor. I got my hands on a new one, as well as the o-ring, and a new plastic clip.
On this car with this engine, it is NOT that easy to get to. I was finally able to wrestle the old one off, and put the new one in. Problem is, that it never felt like it seated 100%. I did the best I could, then put the clip in place, and connected the wire. Took it for a drive, and guess what: leaking coolant. I am at wits end with this thing. I did everything I could do, it really seems to be in place as good as it will go, and I still have issues. Needless to say, I need to fix it, or it will be stuck in my driveway. Any advice, or calming words? I dont wanna continue being angry with my car while I have tools in hand - but I cant seem to seat it any better. maybe a second o-ring? UUGGHH
Thanks!
Arnold

Not to call you a dummy or anything but are you sure you got the old O-ring out of the hole before putting in the new sensor? They commonly get stuck in there and i have done it before once or twice LOL. The sensor should drop right in there without too much force, so if you needed extra force to get the clip in somethings wrong.

ECT - Continued
Hello. I appreciate the reply. I had to use my finger, but I am certain that I had gotten the old o-ring out. I still have it in the garage. I may have mis-spoken in my original post. It really had to pull to get the old ect out, and when I put the new one in, ijust drops in, but doest really seem to 'click into place' or anything like that. I had to use my thumb to push it in, otherwise it seemed like it woudl simply fall right in.
Would it be easier to put the o-ring on the ect, then insert the ect? Or, should I seat the o-ring first, then put the ect in? Thanks for the help...

What color is the new ECT sensor? It should have a green top.
You always put the o-ring on the sensor before installing it, putting the o-ring in before the sensor would cause it to get pinched or rolled inwards.
