Default engine coolant

bought my 2001 A6 4.2 two days ago. And got too excited in the process to not check the engine coolant. earlier today i checked it and it is nearly empty. Just wondering if i need to go to a dealer to check for any problems or if i can just go to my local parts shop and buy some universal fluid.

Be sure to get the G12 type coolant, which is NOT compatible with the green stuff you find at thge Pep Boys. Do not mix and match.
In short, YES go to the dealer.
