Engine RPM/Roughness

Engine RPM/Roughness
I have an 02 A6 Quattro, approx 90K miles. While driving, it feels as if the engine is bouncing up/down (mostly down) on RPM giving it the feeling of running rough and cutting in and out.
Check engine light is on for the power tourqe converter. Was worried this was the issue but also seems to happen at stop/idle. When sitting at idle, you can see the RPM guage drop and immediately return to normal idle. At higher speeds (70/80MPH) does not seem to happen.
Any ideas?
TIA, Bill

I'd suggest clearing the DTC.
Read DTC again - there should be a code for the RPMs.
For the TC - contact Audi US - there is about time to have a recall on TC as TC failures are well documented and Audi has for long a TSB issued.

Thanks nemohm.
I forgot to add, that the CEL blinked momentarily and then stopped. It is now on but not blinking anymore. I know a blinking CEL is not really a good thing.
I hope to have the codes read tonight. Any other suggestions?
Overall, it feels like it is misfiring.
