Unhappy engine swap difficulty?

How difficult is it to swap a 2.8l 30v for another 2.8l 30v...

I think I just broke my tb and I'm thinking it might be more cost effective to just buy a used motor and replace the original.

What model years would this be a direct swap...98, 99, 00, 01?

Would it require any special tools (i.e. vagcom, etc)?

It would be, like any engine replacement, a lot of work, but it should be straight-forward. SHouldn't even need the VAG-COM as long as you reuse the same ECU.
