ESP and ABS light on while NOT driving
Hi Guys,
I have searched this forum up and down but couldn't find the exact problem I'm having right now:
The first time this issue came up was when we had like -10F in Colorado. I was driving to work, the engine was already warm the ABS and ESP light came on at the same time and stayed on (no flashing!). I didn't notice any issues in the driving behavior. Well I got to work and when I drove back home later during the day the lights were off again and didn't come back online until yesterday (like 1 to 2 years later).
So my wife was waiting in the car for about 10 minutes. E-brake was on, Gear set to P and AC running only at like half (it was only 85f outside) and the engine was already warmed up from driving to the parking lot. While I was shipping a package both lights came on again until I turned off the car and turned it back on.
Now again does not seem to be an issue as of yet since I haven't seen both lights come back on but I was wondering if someone has any idea what is going on there.
My car is an A6 4.2 2002 with 107k miles on it

what codes
You scan for codes yet? You'll need to get them.
The ABS module "control units" "go out" frequently on these cars, at 107K, your about due for one. If you determine that this is the case, there are several places you can have them repaired. Some advertise a repair for 110.00 and a quick return time.
Keep in mind, there could be a number of other causes, but the codes will help you track them down.

Thanks for the reply and the ideas. I haven't received my Vag com yet, I'm still using a standard OBD2 scantool that only retrieves check engine lights and nothing else
In about 2 weeks I should have the real thing in my hand and I pull everything I have off it.
I'm glad so far the warning lights go off again once the car restarts but I'd rather live safe then sorry.
As an FYI the ABS control module is linked to the ESP?
