Exhaust Question
Ok new member, hi all.
I'm looking to get an A6, generally read everything available - I plan to get a 4.2, unless I can find a nice 2.7T.
My question is, I have only seen maybe 2 or 3 but They are A6's (one was a 4.2 and one was a 2.7T) with protruding exhausts.
Basically you can see the dual exhausts from the rear as seen below

However most of the A6's I see, dont have these protruding exhausts, however I think they make the A6 look 100000 times better, so I was wondering, was it a model specific or package ? maybe some sports package add on - but I have not read or seen about.
Also are there any MAJOR 2001 model problems I should be aware of, I havent heard of big ones, but the 2002 models seem to be that be more pricey ( I was really looking at about $20K)
Thanks for ya help
Marty

The 2001 and up models have "protruding" exhaust tips, older ones don't. The valence doesn't allow to install protruding exhaust tips. The 4.2 and 2.7T engines are pretty similar in performance, the 4.2 choice eliminates the concern about pricey turbo replacements.
its from 2002 and up, with the face lifts... new front and rear bumpers..
the a6 i bought has every option cept navigation. its 2.7 trim aswell, and no exausts which is ****, i seen a 2002, same options, with the exaust, it sold for too much at the auction..

Could it be possible that its LATE 2001 models, as both the A6's I was looking at were marked as 2001, however most 2001's I see DONT have the exhausts.
Perhaps there was like a 2001.5 model ? - if so this is clearly the model I want
Thanks for your replies

I think that you may be right about a late model. There is another A6 that cruises around my town with the 2.7T that has the dual cutout exhaust and it appears identical to mine. Could be an 02 but it looks almost identical to mine so the difference must be close to nothing if it is an 02.
Ive been thinking about this similar subject and Ive been considering making the cutouts myself and getting a custom exhaust put in place. Seems like it would be pretty easy to do but I may be wrong. Does anyone know of this being done? And how was it done and howd it turn out? Im definetely doing custom exhaust to open that badboy up and at a quick look that valance seemed plastic which would be easy enough to cut.
If your really killing for the dual outlet then I say grab the cheaper and get it done, along with a 2.5 inch pipe diameter to give it some growl. I bet you'll still save all kinds of money and you'll be happy with what you have. My .02 ...
Peace!

saw one today - owner got out same time I did, it had the protruding exhausts, so I asked him what year it was, he said 01 - I said hmm you know if it was a late model. he said he bought it new in October - I dont quite see how thats 'new' but indicated to me it was a late model. - it was a 4.2 but in white (I think black looks much better)
Yes, the exhaust cutouts on the valence have been done with great success. Most people drop the bumper off, mount the exhaust with the tip welded on, then fit the bumper in place while they cut around where the exhaust will protrude. Cutting the bumper first is risky, because you never know exhaust where the exhaust tips will come out. But this procedure has been done plenty of times with good success, on all model ranges.
Keep in mind, only quattro models have the dual exhausts, while FWD models have only a single pipe exiting from the left.
02+ bumper will also fit and IIRC the bumper is actually cheaper than the pre-facelift model bumper. The rear plastic valence will NOT interchange with the one on the 02+ models.
