front muffler- construction ques
Is the middle muffler on the A6 4.3L just a straight-through perforated pipe setup?
I don't want to replace it entirely with straight pipe stock, wondering whether replacing the factory unit with a pair of stainless straight-through bullet or cannister mufflers will change the exhaust note from a whisper to a more of a mutter.

They aren't straight through just replacing the rear mufflers won't get you much of an increase in sound. I only run a single straight through muffler on my S4 and it still isn't that loud.
Thanks. I don't want to replace the rears unless I happen to get hold of some purpose-built units. I was thinking of just replacing the middle muffler because it appears to be pretty easy to use universal aftermarket pieces. I don't want much change- I replaced the muffler on my 4.7L grand cherokee and put a high flow cat in place of the regular cat and its still a little loud for me on the highway even though it has precats that I didn't touch. Depending on the year of your S4, you probably have turbos that add some dampening as well.
Its a center resonator you refer to. It sits right behind the cats. Its sole purpose is too resonate sound. I took mine off and left everything else OEM. Exhuast note changes to a lower rumble and sounds much better. Cost me $60 bucks or so to have it cut out and straight pipes welded in. Performance wise, I noticed the oil was cooler and it had a bit more snap on the freeway. Do it, its worth it. It is not loud or obnoxiuos. It is a very subtle change.
strait pipe causes noise at higher speed ( above 70mph ) sounds ok if you like that sort of thing but I would go for the torpedo silencer or bullet as you call it and not so heavy on the ears but with good results because they are through silencers so not restricted with baffle plates
