Default Gas mileage question...

Well, I don't know if anyone can really help trouble shoot this one...

I bought my 01 A6 2.7T from an Audi dealer in November of '05. It was immaculate and hardly looked used at all. It had 48K on it. According to the computer - the car was getting 23.4 mpg. Since then I have seen it decling slowly but steadily - even during a 2000 mile (highway) trip in December. It now says 22.9. I know, it's only half an 'mpg' but I am afraid that thing is going to keep on dipping. The car has approximately 55K now

Just so you know - my driving habits remind me of my 84 yr. old jewish grandmother in Florida. No offense to jewish people, Floridians or Grandmothers - but I really am gentle with this thing (shame for a BiTurbo I know)

So I can't figure out the reason with the decreasing mileage. I had a fuel sense temp replaced (during that long trip) and the dealer said that the failing one would cause me decreased mileage - but it appears that that certainly didn't fix the problem.

Any tips - anybody out there getting a lot better mileage?

Thanks

JJO

Default RE: Gas mileage question...

its all down to a good service mate, air filter/oil filter/ fuel filter/good quality oil/tyre pressures/traffic jams/the way you drive

Default Are you relying on the display for your info?

It isn't always very accurate. Calculate your mileage when you fill up with gas. See how it goes from fill-up to fill-up. You'll get a lot better picture of your gas mileage that way.

Default What kind of gas are you putting in?

If you're confident it's not your driving style, it could be the gas. If you're putting in regular (87 octane) or mid-grade (89) gas, that will drop your mileage just about what you're seeing. 91 or 93 will produce better mileage. Also, if you do more city driving then the previous owner, that will also drop your mileage. I'd recommend resetting the average (check the owner's manual for directions on how to do this) and see how YOU do adjusting these different variables. That way you'll know YOUR mileage vs. the last person's. Good luck and welcome to the club!
