Default Not a new Question... Gas Mileage?

I would just like to hear what you all are getting as far as Gas Mileage? (Anyone… 1.8T’s, 2.8’s 5M’s, Auto’s, etc) I had a 1998 A4q 2.8 5M, and I was getting 22-26 (mostly hwy). I am currently looking for a 2000-2001 A4/S4 and obliviously having to consider gas mileage into my decision. Thanks, Paul.

There are some existing threads out there about this (use the search feature and look for "gas mileage" and you'll find them) but the quick answer is the 2.8 gets so-so mileage in town (18mpg or so) but on the highway at steady cruising around 70mph or so, it's common to see 30+ on that car. The 1.8T from what I know actually does slightly worse, most likely a combination of a smaller, less-powerful engine trying to move a car that's not a lightweight, and the fact that turbos require fuel enrichment beyond what a similarly-sized NA car would require. Then of course, most of the 1.8T guys are chipped and running elevated boost (and probably getting into the boost quite a bit) so their mileage suffers for it. Not that the tradeoff isn't worth it...

I see mid- to upper-20s in my '98.5 1.8T Quattro 5 spd. The last few tanks have been consistent around 26 MPG. This is mostly freeway driving with A/C on, doing about 70-80 mph and some sitting in morning/afternoon traffic. On a long trip to NC (skiing at Sugar) I got 29 MPG with 5 ppl in the car, stuffed trunk. Not bad IMO.

If you're getting mid-20s that's about right.

I get average about 22-23 mpg. On the freeway, I average 29-35, depending on how I play with the gas and speed. Best I've gotten was 38-40, in the city. This was in 5th gear with the odometer just a line or two about 1k rpms, with all green lights and no traffic.

get over 300 miles a tank, probably more if i finally clean the engine up a bit.
