Gear Stuck in Park (EPC warning)
2006 Audi A6 3.2 FWD
My car is stuck in park. The car starts fine, but I can't shift the gear out of park. The EPC warning light is lit on the dash.
I'm out of town in buttf*ck Mississippi and have a stranded auto with no dealership or knowledgeable repair shop anywhere near me.
Can anyone either a) speculate as to what the issue is; or b) direct me to a thread on this forum that can provide more information?
Much thanks for any help anyone can provide.

There is a switch on the brake pedal which needs to be actuated to allow the shifter to move out of park. It could be something as simple as this switch being loose or having failed and the EPC code could be another problem.
I do not have a 2006 A6 but I have read about that problem. One thing it could be is your brake light switch causing the car not to recognize you pressed the brake pedal. Supposedly you can bypass that for a while to at least get to the dealership/mechanic:
-remove the cover or ashtray from the shifter. Underneath the ashtray you will see a hole, if you stick something in it that fits you will disengage the lock that keeps the car from going to D when in P. This way you should be able to drive until you turn the car off and put it back into P. This procedure can be done multiple times but of course is not a permanent solution.
Another issue could be something with your gearbox/transmission. Without diagnostic tools and maybe other indicator lights on your dashboard hard to say. Try the above first and hope for the best.
Another solution to get it into D from P has been listed on the VW forums: (however this is for an older and different model, so maybe try the above first)
1. Turn the ignition on and hold it between drive and neutral. It's hard but with precision, you can hold in between them without it going into either one.
2. Try and start the car while holding the position that was described in step 1. It make take several attempts but it can be done. The 2nd time it happened to me it took me about 4 trys before it worked.
3. Once the car is on, you can now shift into reverse to get it out of your driveway and into drive to get it to the dealer.

Thanks for the feedback. My driver's side brake light is not working, nor does the driver's side turning signal display (it does display on my dash, though). The passenger side brake light and turning signal work fine.
It seems like this is more indicative of an electrical issue, than just the brake switch.
But really, I have no clue.
