I dunno what car your doing it on but i just got done doing the timing belt, idler tensior roller, and idler pulley, serp. belt. you dont need the cam lock tool its a waste of money. i bought this video off line for 30 bucks. i cant remember the name it was somthing like jlm somthing search it, best 30 ive ever spent and it show you how to do everything with and with out the special tools. but your gonna need metric alans and a torque wrench for sure. my dad knows the name of it, if you cant find it let me know and ill ask for the name or where he got it.

I've just purchased a used 2002 A6Q 3.0 with 80K and realized that the timing belt may be nearing it's end of life. Is there a recommended time/milage that should be replaced and will it damage the valves if it breaks ? thanks

Sometime around now would be good... Believe the book says 90k.

Yes, the valves would hit.

I don't trust the 3.0L motor, the tension on that T belt is much higher than the 2.8L and others like it. I have replaced more cylinder heads from blown timing belts in the 90k range from a 3.0L than any other engine audi has ever made. Don't wait until 90k to get it done, do it NOW.

Some sound advice.

Buy the friggin tools. trust me you will have that t-belt off so many times in the next couple years Audi will be calling you for advice.

Don't ask me how I know this.

I bought mine from el paso on e-bay
you need the c clamps, cam spinning thing, a crank pin would be nice-but not necessary. Ball head metric allens long and shorts.

Also just to be sure you are aware blau rents the tools, a complete kit, and they do return your deposit but you only have 6 days to do the deed and return them.

After reading about all the TB problems people had when they did not use the cam locking tool I believe it is foolish to not use one. I bought the tool and cam pin for my 2.8 and never looked back. It is simple insurance against major problems!
