The window regulator clips are broken more than likely, they are made of plastic and the cable breaks its way through them. Its a common problem on the A4 and A6 so don't be surprised if it happens again to another window down the road. The good news is the front window clips can be replaced by themselves which only cost $5 at www.ecstuning.com
The rear windows you have to bite the bullet unforuntately.

Just on a side note. I had that problem with my front passanger side window and my mechanic sprayed silicone lubricant in the tracks and around the window. Didnt work right away but it must have losened something up once it worked its way in. The window works fine now.
