I believe it is called your shift interlock switch. It is not part of the transmission, it is just a safety check that won't allow you to engage the transmission without you pressing down on the brake peddle. In Volvo's there was a manual override button, but on the Audi I have never seen one.

That's all I can tell you. But it will give you a place to start from.

Most likely cause -- The brake light switch - Have someone stand behind the vehicle and step on the brake - If the lights don't go on you need to replace the switch. - Do a search here there is lots of info on what you need to do.

Yes, it is what prevents you from moving the shifter until putting your foot on the brake peddle. The shift interlock is just a solenoid that releases a pin. The pin prevents you from moving the shifter, when you press on the brake, the brake switch tells the solenoid to move the pin out of the way.

If your case, because your little brake symbol stops blinking when you press on the brake, I would say your brake light switch still works as it appears to be sending a signal to the interlock that you pressed down the brake peddle. But your interlock is bad. But I could be completely wrong.
