Holy codes!!!
2002 A6 3.0 quattro
Alright, Vag-com came in today, so I jumped right on diagnosing my auto trans issue (happened again this morning AND when I left work). I decided to pull all codes from the car and I will list all of them here. I cleared them all b/c I have no idea how old some of these are, so I will repull in a week or so and see which ones pop back up and are a current issue.
The "open due to crash signal" kinda pops out at me b/c the car has a clean CarFax and AutoCheck - what speed are we talking about to set that off? Is it possible it was just a random bad signal?
Also, does anything stand out as a "Park the damn car and get that fixed now!!!!" code???

Alright, well finally drove the car yesterday - only about 20 miles total, but the only codes that came back were:
17090 - Transmission Range Sensor (F125): Implausible Signal
P0706 - 003 - Mechanical Failure – Intermittent
01119 - Gear Recognition Signal
35-10 - - - Intermittent
Yes, tranny messed up on me again - seems if I put it back in park and shut off / restart - that it solves the issue - at least for that trip. Are these two related though? I don't know if 01119 is "gear" as in transmission gears or "gear" as in a specific ABS related component - ie - sensor or gear at one of the wheels that registers speed, etc?

Weird that 01119 comes up as both ABS and Tranny related, and nobody seems to know what it is
However, I would think that you have the 01119 due to having 17090, ie: the ABS/ESP has no idea what gear your in so doesn't know how best to proceed.
Here's something that mentions it, but I didnt read through the whole thing:

F125 is the multi-function switch located on the gearbox, I believe. I would pull the connector, clean and replace.

P0706- selector cable needs adjustment
01119 could have been because the cable in out of adjustment. Happened on mine but after the wife drove it. I blame her first, car second
So you can go to Audi and have it and your wallet adjusted doesn't look hard.
Or you can do it yourself. If you plan on wrenching on it you will need to get a bentley manual to go along with that new Vagcom. www.bentlypublishers.com. I bought mine from www.blauparts.com they sent me a dvd-rom for about $100. It works like crap with Vista so if you have a computer set up with XP load it on that. I would paste the info for you but I can't because of Vista.
I'll try to get it off the XP for you tomorrow.
Basically, you will need to get the car up on stands crawl under it locate the shift cable on the transmission and loosen two bolts to do the adjustment.

Yeah, Bentley is my next purchase and VERY soon - I always insist on working on my vehicles myself whenever possible. I'm just debating on the disc vs book form. I love the idea of TSB's and more detailed info on disc, but I'm also on Vista. I also heard that sometimes the disc stops working and the only option is to rebuy - screw that. I'll more than likely order the book.
I spoke w/ local Audi dealer today and they told me that it was an issue in the past for the sensor to become messed up. The sensor is actually a magnet on the underside of the black casing that you see inside the shifter gate - it moves w/ the shifter. Audi said that use to crack and the sensor slides above or through a circuit board underneath and the signal would get jacked up. Anyway, new sensor is $68 and AudiTech79 gave me a quick rundown on how to swap it, but I'd be removing quite a few pieces (radio, shifter ****, etc) and I definitely don't want to do that if it's as simple as a cable adjustment.
So, if you can e-mail that to me (pm'ed you), that'd be awesome. And if you save me this $68 + possible install, then looks like I'll be ordering my Bentley by Monday!!

I tried to get it with no success the DVD ROM is a pain in the butt. I'll try again for you tomorrow. I would buy the DVD because you can search for things and topics faster then looking it up in text. So if you entered shift cable you may get 5 repairs and 6 tsb's to read instead of reading through useless crap all night.
