If it's not a symmetrical system, don't make it look symmetrical. One of the other, I say.
That is because NOT every country drives on the right side of the road. This allow to have the single fog light wired for for the proper side without any major modification. It is smart engineering if you want to sell your cars worldwide, including the UK and what is left of the British Commonwealth.
Next time you get pulled over, just show the cop that you can turn the rear fog light ON/OFF depending on road conditions and visibility.
My 2 previous cars also did this... Oh wait a minute, they were 2 Audis!
Now also make sure your rear lights and brake lights are functional. Maybe that is what other folks are really telling you and you assumed the fuss was about the fog light.

10-4. Thanks. I actually spend a lot of time driving through Targhee National Forest in WY/ID/MT and it's SOOOO foggy there in the mornings, I figured I should use the fog lights, but if it's going to cause this much confusion with other drivers and local authorities, I'll just avoid them altogether.

Thanks again to those who clarified!... And no thanks to those who simply insulted.

LOL Stang - I didn't insult you! I told you why Audi designed the required light into the rear of the vehicle.

Then I told a story about what I think when I see someone driving around with the rear fog lamp on in clear weather.

I don't know why you took it personally. If anyone was insulting it was your saying the designers were dumb. By the way Audi isn't the only vehicle manufacturer to hide the single rear fog lamp behind a symetrical covering.

Maybe your pissed that you got a ticket or your not happy unless your unhappy - anyway have fun with your Audi - Even though it has only one rear fog light.. LOL

Wink

10-4. Sorry I flew off the handle. But you must admit in hindsight that one could have drawn the conclusion that you were comparing the blinker guy to me. Anyway, I understand now WHY Audi did it, just don't agree with their logic, which they've obviously recanted themselves on newer models. I didn't get a ticket for it. It just annoyed me to know that something factory installed was confusing enough to warrant an officer pulling me over (albeit a hyper-strict one).

Side story, I was going over the Targhee pass 2 days ago (very foggy) and when i pull into Victor, a beautiful RS4 pulls in beside me. As we walk into the gas station, I say to him how beautiful of a car he has. He returned the compliment (humoring me, I'm sure) and then said, "oh, by the way, you have a rear fog light out." ARGH!! I said, thanks. But come on now! He drives and RS4 and doesn't even know about the 1 side on, 1 side off thing...

In ending, am I talking this WAY too much to heart? Absolutely. NH USA, again, Sorry I flipped on ya, but thats just the way I am, I expect high end car makers to have insightful options and well thought out features, which for 99.9% of what I've seen is the case. And I don't take well to even, the hint of insult. Call it a character flaw... admitting it's the first step right. ...course, the second step is finding places for all the bodies!

PS - I still love these cars.

No problem!

BTW Police need a reason to pull someone over, so I'm guessing that the the cop used the rear light-out story as a reason. I was stopped late at night a few years ago and was told my plate light was out. After he checked my reg and licencwe he let me go. 10 minutes later I pulled off the raod and checked the light. It must have been a miracle because it was working and worked for about a year.

So, does anyone actually know the answer to your original question? Mine's out and I'd like to change it. My ElsaWin manual is not cooperating.

And yes, I have two and one is now out (before anyone starts down that path again... )

Only one is designed to work, not two.

Mkay. Anyway...

I have two rear foglights. Both worked last month (as verified be me and my own eyes). Only one works now. Does anyone know how to replace them? I googled this question and the only good link was to this thread. Seems that no one answered the OP's question.

I'd rather not take my boot lining apart and break some little plastic clip despite being careful. If not, I'll just buy another manual, since my ElsaWin will not work anymore for some reason.

Maybe RS6 is different, but most of c5s came with single rear fog light assembly. Some weird DOT regulation about not having 2 bright red lights on at the rear or bs. Anyways, to get to the rear fog lights, you do need to take the trim out. There are 2 screws holding the trim, two more at the warning triangle. You also need to take out the emergency trunk release handle and the bracket for the triangle as well.

Are you sure that you had 2 fog lights at the rear? There are some people who had to get a spare light assembly at junkyard to light up the other one. If your RS6 has 2, then good for you.
