How to use Triptonic
All the Tiptronic does is shift for you. It should be virtually noise-free. If yours is making a noise, I'd venture to guess it is defective in some way.
Keep in mind that the car will automatically shift your 1-2 for you. From 2 up, you have full control.

I know I will catch some replies for this but I am absolutely convinced that my 2000 A6 4.2L lost reverse because of my use of Tiptronic. Maybe coincidence but the car drove fine until one day I decided to use it all day. I can drive a stick, have owned Porsche's so I'm not new to performance and did not "beat" on my A6. I don't really have anything to back this statement up with other than intuition. But I am convinced the reverse issue in the 4.2'sis linked to the Tiptronic design. So use it sparingly friends.
A discussion on another Audi forum site suggested that when he shut off his ESC, he got reverse back. I have no idea what the ESC is. Any suggestions?????

If your so convinced that your Tiptronic is the reason why you lost your reverse, why don't you take to a shop to have them look at it.
Tiptronic shifts up and down gears and has nothing to do with your reverse gear, unless you slammed it into reverse which would be dumb if you did but I would look into it.

Many will disagree but I don't see any use from triptronic. It's just the sales thing to make people who are incapable to drive normal car (5 speed=) feel better.
In my opinion auto is more effective in snow/bad weather. I drive 5 speed all the time, and snow, well it's easy to go with auto, you can just limit it to no go more then 3 or 4th and it will be better then manual - mainly because off easy ans smooth starting in 1st. =)
Now, myaudia6, you move the level into triptronic position and just tip it to + or - when you want it to shift to the next gear or back. I tried it once - did not like it at all. You'll wear your clutches, like some people like to 'shift' auto from 1 to 2 to 3 and to D.... I think triptronic is not that bad but il worse then just letting it thift by itself in D. Remember, the car is much more capable then the driver! %) If yours making sound - forget about it, you'l not loos much anyway.
Frails - your rear problem is probably hydro related. Plugged valves or something like that. Depends what it does. Anyway it can be fixed by your own means. You'll have to get transmission jack and a few days to fix it though. I've repaired automatic transmission once, it took me 6 days to do. I repolished all the hydro valves and replaced both differential bearings - fixed the problem of not shifting at all %)

The reason I won't take it into the dealer is because of the outrageous rates. I've got a $2500 quote from an indie and that's the route I'm going. But first things first...I'm having a complete timing belt, water pump, thermostat, , dampener, belts and rollers job done tomorrow for $850.
Thanks for the thoughts on the hydro angle. Only input I can give is that since I live in AZ and it's 100 degrees right now, it grips just a little more in reverse, meaning the expanision of materials due to heat is affecting the seal or fit for greater compression. Does that make sense? I've heard the seals can get chewed up pretty easily and the tranny kits have completely different seals now. Either way, at 68k miles I'm just gonna have the tranny rebuilt and be done with it. Love my 4.2L!!
