Default Ignition sticking... help!

Hello to everyone! I've got a 96 A6Q that has a sticking ignition. Usually when I start the car, I have to back the key off of the start position just to turn off the starter and to turn on the a/c and whatnot. My buddy insists that the problem is the the key and tumber itself, while I feel that it is probably an issue with the ignition switch itself. Obviously there is a price difference between the two (actually, in my podunk little town, I can't even get the key and tumbler!) So what is it... the tumbler or the switch? How difficult is it to change the switch? And are there any how-to's online for this? Thanks so much!

I had a very similar issue with my 97 A4 2.8 and there was a recall on the ignition switch so you want to call a dealer and give them your VIN.
Mine was replaced for free as part of the recall.

Default Ignition Switch

Get a new ignition switch FROM THE DEALER, no part store cheap part. New from dealer is about $30. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to swap it out. Tools needed are a Phillips screwdriver and a small (2 mm ) jewelers screwdriver and some locktite. You'll have to take out the instrument panel (Phillips) and then find the ignition switch and loosen the two small screws (2 mm) on the switch, remove the wiring connector and slide out the old switch. Installation is the reverse and don't forget to use the locktite on the small screws.

Dealers charge 2 hours labor + parts.

Default Switch

Connector is a very tight fit with multiple prongs to prevent misalignment.

I like in Podunk Ohio, so I won't be taking it to the dealer

So basically pull out the instrument panel, and find the switch? Sounds like a pretty easy job?
