Default Intermittent ABS warning light + flashing brake light

I have a 99 A6 Avant, auto, 2.8 engine.

I've recently been getting the dashboard ABS warning light sometimes, but not always, and when it is on the brake warning light is flashing. When this occurs, the brakes still work fine except apparently the ABS doesn't - I tried a hard stop on a slick road and could feel the rear brakes lock up.

I can't detect any pattern, so far, as to when it is on and when it isn't. Just this morning, on cold start, about 40degreesF, it wasn't on. Then I drove a couple miles, parked, came out a half hour later and it was on.

Any suggestions on what the likely cause is and/or how to diagnose it, and how to repair it or what needs to be repaired? I did a full brake job - front and rear pads/rotors, in the spring, and other than this they work fine.

thanks

Default abs fix

hi have 98 a6 Qttr and the same thing happened a few years ago. turns out it was the ABS module. a fairly easy to get at (it's behind the drivers wheel and to the front)
and repair situation for the average DYI.
There is a guy I found that has a video on-line that is a step by step instruction manual
on how to take it out, wrap it and send it to him. fixes it, sends it back and your done. you do not need it in the car for it to drive. you just won't have abs while it's out.
he did mine and i've had no trouble since. it was very reasonable and way cheaper than a replacement.
guy was "module masters" here is their site ......

Hi all,

I had similar problem with my A8 4.2 1997., but when we removed whole pump out, it showed that connectors were burned, like from short circuit or soemthing.
after that, electrician put it back in order, but now after 6 months it still warns me while driving.
also, i found that reserve connector for braking, on my brake pedal is faulty, but can it be in corelation with ABS?
