RE: Led Display
My LED on the dash is starting to go out and it's freaking me out. Not even sure how much it is to fix? I don't even want to know. You would think it would be covered under warranty but it starts to go out just as you hit 60k miles which is convenient...

mikedee,
As I understand it, you'd have to replace the radio. eBay is the place to look for that. Also, the classifieds here and at www.audiworld.com & www.audizine.com. Do a search on the words "cup holder part number" -- you should be able to find the part number in the forum. You can order them from www.clairparts.com (call them to get the part number if you don't find it easily) or www.1stvwparts.com.
cary12,
The fading LEDs in the dash is a completely different issue. There's a tech article on replacing the dash cluster on www.audiworld.com -- look for tech articles under the "resources" menu there. Fairly common problem.

RE: Led Display
I have the same problem where my main LED is fine when I start the car, but then fades to and unreadable dim when it warms up.
Why does the whole display have to be changed as previously stated . Can't you just get and change the LED display rather than the whole instument cluster?
It was stated is $400 to change the instument cluster, but how much is the VAG-COM that you have to get to read codes? Do you need this VAG-COM if only the LED display can be purchased and replaced?
Please advise

RE: Led Display
The "core charge" is like a refundable deposit. You get it back when you return the cluster. That way, it can be reworked and sold as refurbed. The whole thing needs to be replaced because the typcial DIYer cannot reliably be expected to handle soldering in and out the small LED display.
Do a search on "VAG-COM locator" (or check for it on Stoney's Links -- see my sig for the link). There is a community of people out there who already own the VAG COMs and are happy to help others out. You can buy one from Ross-Tech for around $100.
Good luck!

RE: Led Display
I have the same problem on my Trip Computer. First a few lines would appear to be off, now dozens appear to be off and the "gear" indicator area seems to be blury, particularily if driving without the AC on.
How much would it cost to have this repaired if you're not a DIYer?
