Default Left rear turn signal issue

I am working on a friends 2006 A6 sedan. when you first start the car, the left rear turn signal works fine for two or three times, then it quits. If you shut the car off and restart it a half an hour or so later the turns signal works again, but only for a couple tries, then it quits again. I have checked all the connections at the rear and they look fine. I first thought it was the LED display that was the problem so I removed the tail light and hooked the LED strip up to a 12v source, and it stayed on for several minutes. I read somewhere that there is a Body Control Module that may be the culprit. Does this sound reasonable? I don't want to go buying and replacing a lot of parts that my friend would pay for, just to have this not be the fix. If it were my car I would just start replacing parts.
