Default Newbie Buys 2000 A6 Quattro 2.8 from Son

I'm having a helluva time posting anything - hope this works. Bought 145K mile A6 from #1 son, but it has numerous "issues" - needs a new ABS brain, precats are burnt out, engine leaks (probably from l/h camshaft, among other places). Have already replaced CV joints, valve cover gaskets, etc. Just drove the car from WA to CA & back with no problems except the above - nice cruiser. Also have an '88 Porsche 928S4, everyday driver in Rome, Italy, where I usually live - I have a bootleg copy of maintenance manual for that which is great for pictures of stuff and ordering parts, etc. Wondering if something like that is available to owners of old Audi? Already have the Vag-com for pulling codes which a friend uses to figure out what's with the lights on the dash. Parts are cheaper at Halsey Automotive in Portland, closest decent sized city. Coming up on time to change timing belt, water pump, etc - might as well change cam seals if sprocket comes off without a major war.... Anyone having ideas is welcome to email me at Maserbob40@hotmail.com. Thanx for any help you can render.

I have an 03 A6 2.7T, bought in 05 with 48k miles, I have driven it less than 5k miles in the last 2.5 years and am currently at 191k miles. Oil always changed at 5k, mobil 1 synthetic. Have had to replace the ign. coils, 5 went around 110k, have gone through both front axles, front suspension changed due to worn out, brake light switch, tb at around 105k, plus everything to go with it, alternator went around 155k, sub amp started going around 115k, instrument cluster for the digital display continually get worse, sunlight developed a leak around 95k, oil leak from valve cover seal around 180k, the rest of the oil seals around 185k, 2 coolant expansion tanks, rebuilt secondary air injection motor(tons easier than you can imagine and only about 20 bucks for super high grade ceramic bearings), secondary water pump around 120k, secondary air injection hose to valves, around 130k. I think my catalytic converters are going as well, oh and the torque converter around 175k, and the mass air flow sensor around 177k. I think that there are a couple of other things that I am overlooking right now. I love the car when it runs, but it is crazy expensive to keep it running. The car is paid off which is why I keep it and I do the work myself. If it were not for both of those 2 things, I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago. And before anyone mentions the mileage, like Audi USA loves to do, I drove a Mitsubishi 3000 gt to 8yrs old and 195k before a service place added oil to the tranny rather than tranny fluid, it fried it in under 1k miles. I have also driven a pontiac grand am, a grand prix and a saturn to similiar years and mileage, as well as a Chevy corsica and beretta. I also currently have an 03 Tahoe LT 4wd at 160k miles and a 01 ford mustang at 145k, all vehicles combined have still less maint. and repair than this vehicle.

2004 Audi A6 3.0 Quattro, 81,000 miles runs good and smooth, but gas miles about 20 mpg with 75% free way driving. Timing belt has not been changed. Audi dealer would charge $1700 for timing belt replacement (plus rollers and tensioner), and local Eupropene car shops would charge around $1200-1400. It costs too much for a timing belt.

It is my very first time to own an Audi. I have not tried A6 2.7T or 3.0T. My 3.0 is not as smooth as my 3.0 V6 Camry on many performance aspects.

what was your timing belt change schedule? Did you replace it yourself? It appears to be a lot work.
