Looking into buying an A6, advice needed
Hello,
I've been an Audi enthusiast for a long time and I'd like to buy an A6. I've considered the 2.7t and the 4.2 models. How do these compare perormance wise? If money weren't an issue I'd go with an SR6 but I can't see spending twice as much for an additional 150hp. Are there alot of aftermarket engine mods for either of these models? Would it be possible to adapt a bi turbo system to the 4.2 liter V8, creating an RS6? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Jon

Jon,
All depends on your budget... (which is?)
That said, here's a few things to consider...
Stock performance out of a 2.7T beats a 4.2 -- especially if you go with a 6 speed manual. On top of that, the 2.7T offers numerous upgrade paths, whereas the 4.2 does not. I cannot imagine how costly it would be to try to graft a couple of turbos onto a 4.2 -- probably the sort of money that could upgrade you to an RS6.
Sounds like you want a kick in the pants out of your car and the ability to mod it. That equals a 2.7. Here's a link to a few more discussion points on the topic: From this forum
Final point. This debate has been covered EXTENSIVELY. Do a search on the forum and you'll get much more info that you can out of posting a new query on the topic.
Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys. My buget for a stock car is around $25,000, but I need something that's reliable so I would prefer buying a car with lower miles.
I do like triptronic transmissions as it gives you the best of both worlds. However, I'm looking for performance so I'd go with the 6 speed manual.

If you want a six speed, you've made your decision. 2.7T is the only way you can go. Will also serve you well in terms of performance and opportunities to modify that have been done by MANY others (thus giving you a large pool of people to learn from on this and other forums).
Good luck with your search. With that budget, you should be able to fine something just fine with low mileage (I paid $21.9k for my car and it had 28k miles on the clock). Couple of things to watch for... Get the sport package if you can. You can always upgrade the suspension components if you can't find the car you want with a sports package, but good luck upgrading the seats (a very nice part of the sports package). If you can find a 2003 2.7T in your price range (should be just possible) you should be able to get low mileage AND the sports package was standard for that car as of that year.
Keep us posted on how you make out!

i agree with southboro.... the 6 speed is generally a better way to go for performance upgrades.... i am actually in the same boat as you! i am looking for an A6 to buy here within the next 6 months. but if you want the tiptronic you can still get the same desired results... but it will cost just a tad more, being that the tip will require a transmission upgrade. about $800 for a good one... check out... www.levelten.com i am leaning to the convenience of a tip for myself... good luck with your search...
