Yes- do not skip the alignment. Have a good shop lined up ready to go.

Your camber will be off in front and can't be adjusted unless you have a camber kit...
I personally like a little camber but if you rotate your tires often and regularly, you should limit the uneven wear...

If you were to have a tire shop do this what would be the cost to lower and

How much for parts?

Just curious, I am a newbie but would like to have it done, justdon't have the time and also want it done right.

I have an 01 that looks JUST LIKE the one in the pic...

to do an aignment?
if so, you definitely need a shop and not all are equipped to perform alignments

or install springs?
heard they are a PITA, count 4-5hours labor charge IMO

OK it is a very open question, for the best answer we would need to know what you are looking for, what your budget is... do you track the car? are roads bad in your area? do you favor low ride and better handling over comfort....

I would say the following:

Coil overs are very good byt very expensive and much more more than what 90% of drivers need/want. They also tend to be rough on our cars. PSS9's are real nice and adjustable not only in height but also in dampening, but count on paying 1500-1700 plus 4-5 hrs labor at whatever rate your shop charges.

Springs only: If you have the regular (non sport) suspension, I would not recommend it as it will ruin your shocks super fast, especially if you go for the low H&Rs wich have a more aggressive spring rate than the Eibachs. If you have sport suspension, it is ok to run springs only HOWEVER it is MY EXPERIENCE on my A6 that it is not a good idea as it still wears your shocks faster and the car will bounce and bottom out more in some areas. If you ahve sport suspension and want to do springs only, I would recommend the Eibach kit. it is less aggressive, therefore not as low and more comfortable but will cure the 4X4 look
I did springs only (H&R) and regretted it so then I aqdded shocks.... not a good idea, i basically paid labor twice... so learn from my mistake Save long term

Springs and shocks: a common option because it is 500-1000$ cheaper than coilovers typically and more than enough for 90% of A6 owners who don't track their cars and just want the better look and improved hanlding. But here again choices choices choices... which shocks and springs? Depends on what you are looking for....
I had Koni yellows/sport shocks with H&R Sport springs. Ride sat real low, looked awesome and handled like a ... 4000lbs race car However, my wife and kids did not like the ride at all. Pretty rough on bad roads.
So now I sold that set and had installed Koni FSDs (adjustable based on driving, so softer on bad roads, bumps... for comfort and harder in cornering for improved handling.) and Eibach springs.
The car is not as low, especially in the back and does not handle quite as well, but I get about 80+% of the handlinf form my previous suspension set up and comfort close to stock in 90% of road conditions. I LOVE THAT SET UP! The combo is set as a kit, tested and approved by Koni, otherwise they don't recommend their FSD with lowered acrs. So money well spent.

want/need to still ride somewhat smooth, just look sharper, if that's possible.

I have the 2.8L A6 so I doubt it has the sports suspension
[/blockquote]

Well I would definitely rule out C/O.

Get a decent shock, not too aggressive and Eibach springs then. The main brand names for shocks are Koni and Billstein. Never tried Billstein shocks, but like I said, I like the FSD's.
check tirerack for your car and see if they ahve the Koni/FSD-Eibachprokit combo, it works well and seem to match your goals.
Look to spend ~$800+ for the kit and 4/5 hours labor and not sure what rate your shop is. Some dealers charge 120/hr, my two indy shops charge $80 and 95.
Do the math!
Good luck
