Default major problem, could use advice

So my 01 a6 2.7t, 55k,had a check engine light come on in its first 30 days of owning it so I went to the dealership to have it checked since it was still under the limited warranty. Also there was a fainting burning oil smell very intermittenly. They tell me that the camshaft is leaking and it is a 2k job. I thought that the camshaft didn't leak? Now they are saying it isn't under the warranty, which gaskets aren't, but they offered to split the cost with me. I called bullshit and am waiting to hear back from the manager. Any thoughts on this type of repair or if it is normal and the price is right?

Edit: It is the cam tensioner gasket that needs to be replaced.

Depending upon where you purchased the car, the dealer has to offer you a dealer warranty for XX amount of days. Where they would apply a deductible if you had any issue that needed to be attended too. I wouldn't go "splitting" any costs with them until you talk to the sales and service manager! just my two cents

just finished with the sales rep, the 30 day warranty states that the gaskets and seals are not covered... But I was able to get them to match the quote I got from another shop, $1040, and then split the difference. So I feel 520 isn't too bad for both camshaft seals and breather hose replacement.

Thankfully I just won a poker tourney for 1800 so I got some extra cash. I am definitely buying the bentley manual and vagcom this weekend so I don't have to deal with them anymore.
