Default maxscan vag450 says "link error"

this is a 98 a6 qttr auto 30v that i have posted on over the last couple of weeks.
did the timing and it won't start. re-checked with all the right tools and same.
bought the vag and all I get , other than a few of the
entries such as tranny and hvac, is the "link error" code........I've gone on the UK site and updated the scanner to the 2.7 version from the 2.2 it came with and still the same.
Any clues to now wtf this car is doing???
Thanks!

I have't a clue about the Maxscan I only use RossTech and my laptop.

Try pulling the radio fuse. Somtimes the radio screws up the code readers.

Default fuse pulled

Hi NH , pulled the radio fuse and then it would not read anything.
put it back in and it read the tranny and radio codes.

tranny said : 00526 brake light switch F static ; implausible signal

radio said : no codes in module

tried every other catagory and the vag said "link error"

Possible the ECU is just fried? How often does that happen?
Thanks, I'm out of ideas and see that you can get one on e-bay pretty cheap.
do you know where the damn thing is so I can match part numbers?
I'll look under the seat......

Sorry -- I don't know -- if you were in the US I'd suggest trying the AutoZone scanner to see if they can connect. Maybe someone near you is willing to help.

Default scanner

Hi NH ,we talked before. I'm in colorado and my Dad was born in Wilton, NH.
I grew up in Ma. and been out west for about 25 yrs. yea this is the a6 i did the thermo on without the right tools and the belt sliped off. after the first go round of putting it back together it started and putted down to autozone. the only code I got then was the
p1857 code which no one here could tell me what it meant. I also got that code on this scanner in one of the diagnostic modes. however this time of putting it back together with the cam lock etc has produced a non-start.........what do u think about a bad ECU ?

Check to see if you are getting a spark.
Do you have the BentleyPublishers, com Audi shop manual? My Bentley does not cover your 1998 A6 sedan, just the 1998 A6 wagon with the 12 valve engine. My wagon has fuses inside the electronic control box under the carpet in the passenger footwell, however the wagon has the C4 chassis. Your 1998 A6 sedan has the C5 chassis and the 30 valve engine.

Hi Audifield, I now remember who you are. --

Try this link for P1857 info --

As for the no fire situation... If the crank pin went in the crank sensor hole make sure you didn't mess up the wires -- and check the sensor.
