Default mystery sensor leaking oil on 1997 a6 2.8

I am having oil sensor issues , blinking oil can and the temp oil sensor barely reads anything.
But i have been losing some oil for some time from a sensor on the drivers side of the block held on by a 8 or 10 mm bolt.
So i figure the first thing i should do is replace this sensor and stop the most glaring oil leak.
What is that thing, it has a couple of wires that are integrated into the sensor and disappear up into the wiring loop.

Thanks for any help

First thing that comes to mind in that area is the engine speed sensor.
