Default need confirmation of hesitation

Of course, I have searched, but most of the problems lie with the auto.

Background: 2003 A6 2.7t, 6-speed. 61k miles. I'm new to Audi, have an average knowledge of turbos and how to do things right with them.

I really just need confirmation on 2 things. I think our turbos are synchro'd (not staged as in one for lower RPMs and one for higher). True? If the turbos are "staged", then that answers my next question.

The other "problem" is when I am at 3/4 to full throttle, in first and second gear, it seems to hesitate at around 3,500-4,000k rpm for a split second. I originally assumed that it was just turbo lag, but it should be fully spooled by then(?). After 4,500 rpm, power resumes to full. Is this a characteristic of the 2.7 or a problem I should look into?

They are not sequential turbo's, they both do the same work at the same time.

Is the car stock? Have you checked out the TBB & DV's? You might have a boost leak. Best thing would be to check for codes.

If there was a boost leak, wouldn't that show up with either a CEL or some warning on the display? The more I think of it, maybe it is the DVs. It builds too much pressure, and the DVs leak it out, then close back up and the turbos fire up again. Does that make sense?

You will only get a CEL if it's a bad leak, a small leak will not trip it. The DV's & TBB are weak points, known for leaks.

Again, you can have stored codes that do not throw a CEL, you might want to check them.
