Many many years ago, I was told that it is better to do both sides whenever there is a suspension issue to fix, such as tie-rod ends.

Is the same true forthe CV boots?Should both front sides be changed?

If you have cracks in the CV boots, then it is best to replace them before they completely fail. The front outer CV boots are more likely to fail, due to their severe flexing. Perhaps, you didn't notice the small hairline cracks, or you had something hit the boot.
If you have the Bentley Audi shop manual, it will tell you what tools you will need, etc.
You need to inspect the other CV boots for small cracks.

Ahh lucky me, I was replacing my brake pads this weekend, and also noticed that my passanger side CV boot was torn. Car is still under factory warranty, is this covered? Thanks guys.

I would have to imagine it is. The manual calls for the first CV boot inspection at 60K so I imagine that is about when they expect them to fail. Seems a simple phone call is in order.
