You mean trans out? Look at the rear main while your there..

The main things that go on a 2.8 12v are the Valve Cover gaskets, front and possibly rear cam seals, front crank seal, water pump and thermostat, timing belt and idlers.

If you dont have the paperwork showing a timing belt job in the last 50k miles, it would be prudent to at least think about doing soon. Its not that hard on your model year as there's room upfront to work. A timing belt job includes the water pump, front cam seals (if leaking), front crank seal (if leaking), thermostat, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and of course, the timing belt. A special cam 'locking' bar is used to keep the cams aligned as the cam pulleys are friction fit on a tapered cam snout.

Fortunately, all the parts for the TB job can be had in a kit, and the tools rented:

Late 1995 - 1997: http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail....od=GH21111%2DC

You want them valve cover gaskets and rear main seal too...

Forgot to mention.. If your overflow tank is any kind of yellowed/crusty, you might as well as pick up a new one soon also.. they are prone to cracking every 100k or so.

every rubber seal and gasket in that engine and tranny are probably shot so as many as you can replace but definatley the ones you can get to now. I would suggest the tranny input and rear main, any seals on the back of the engine, all of the vacuum lines, timming belt if you don't know when that was done last.

thanks for all this information! very helpfull! 80% of what i have been told has been done by the previous owner, exspet the rear seals, the thermostat.
I was told by a previous A6 owner that its is the pressure p[late that goews out in the clutch and possibly the throwout berring????
regardlesss the engine is coming out this weekend and all of it will be looked at and fixed(hopefully)
what was that about a reserve tank? easy to get to???

again thanks for the help!

yes, Quattro is AWD..

Not a reserve tank, but the cooling system's overflow tank.. the plastic one with the blue pressure cap.. They tend to develop hairline cracks and leak.. just something look for.

Unhappy new a6 owner

Just bought a 2000 a6 from a dealer and there were no probems except a quirky LCD in the center of the dash, that tells temperature, MPG. After a few days, I began to get the smell of oil in the cabin and when I took it back, they said it was a leaky oil filter(since they had just done an oil change). This seemed to solve the problem until 3 days later. The oil smell was noticable outside, but not inside. Today the LCD starts fine, but when I put the car in gear it goes blank except for shifter settings. The car has 88000 and I am the 3rd owner. Does anyone think my oil problem is the valve cover gasket or something else. Also, any suggestions about the lcd display.
