RE: Oil changes and filter and all that
Just did and oild change in my 2003 A6-4.2. Start to finish, took about 30 minutes. btw, I highly recommend ramps. It was actually easier to do than my wifes chevy malibu due to easier access to the oil filter from below.
$60 Mobil 1 full syn 0-40
$16 filter from ecstuning.com
$3 drain plug washer from ecstuning.com
local european shops wanted to charge me $150 for the same service.

RE: Oil changes and filter and all that
I've found a couple garages that will change my oil and filter for $15 if I supply the Mobil1 and filter. Ask around. Check your manual, but you'll probably take a little over 7 quarts. I generally run 0W-40 in the winter and 5W-30 or-40in the summer. I can only find the 0W at Autozone in quarts.
Before I get abused, I changed my own oil on many cars for 30+ years. I did my own suspension mods on offroad Jeeps. At this point in my life,I'd rather wash, wax, and drivethem then climb underneath and deal with the mess.
If your gas mileage sucks, I'd suggest replacing the air filter, checking the air pressure in your tires, and accelerating slower.

RE: Oil changes and filter and all that
Unless your really really skinny you'll need to jack the car up to get under it for the oil change.
It does not have to be level to drain the old oil but once your done check the level on somewhat level ground
Don't be stupid --- Always use jack stands when working under a car.
I always use Mann filters on my Audis.
As for oil -- I drive 500 plus miles a week and usually change the oil at around 5 - 6K.
I use usually use std 10-40 but will switch to 5-40 or 5-30 in the cold weather.
I know Mobil 1 is probably better but I really can't justify the extra cost - seeing how I got 350K on my Audi 200QT and now have almost 180K on my A6 Avant.

hey RAP if the quart of crap your buying isnt synthetic then when you run the regular crap oil through your synthetic coated insides it will sludge and probably not remove much and just sludge up because that is what happens when regular and synthetic are mixed ... not sure if thats a great idea ... but everything else sounds right
