Oil Pressure Warning Not Operating

Oil Pressure Warning Not Operating
Just noticed an odd fault on my 1999 A6 TDi 1.9.
On turning on the ignition (yeah,ok, I know its a diesel..no ignition, but..), the warning lights come on during the start up check, so the bulb is OK.
Unfortunately the warning lamp does not come back on again when it should, eg stall the engine or disconnect the pressure switch...
I have checked the switch: open circuit to earth with engine stopped, short circuit to earth when engine running, so thats OK
I have checked the wire to the switch, and that shows the battery voltage, so it is connected to something and not broken.
Anyone seen this before???
(Would be nice to know if I loose oil pressure....!!!)
