Ok now confused
So the car is stalling and losing revs and then the oil warning lamp (the serious one) starts flashing.
Options are 1
dead engine (terminal at least)
Option 2
something else
Have checked oil pressure with mechanical gauge - Stable 4.0 bar falling to 3.5 bar when hot. So presumably not a major mechanical.
which leaves Option 2
Installed new pressure switch but symptoms remain the same with addition that rev counter is also now dead..
Wiring seems OK.
Am nervous of driving despite apparently good oil pressure - worried that some electrical aspect will kill engine (probably while passing a truck).
Any ideas anyone?

Ok so maybe i should give you a little more than that. Saw the same problem on a vw passat today. The vehicle was diagnosed with a faulty abs control module. Common problem on both vehicles. Figured there was a problem with the can data bus and since the abs control module was know to be faulty that seemed like a good place to start. Definatly sounds like a data bus problem however as the rpm signal comes from the ecm.
