Default Quattro not working? what??!

Hey all I am driving a 96 A6 and my AWD is not working. When I press the "DIFF" button some times the lights light up (the Anti-Lock Off and the Green Display light showing the rear axel is engaged) sometimes they wont. Sometimes I will press the button and all lights light up I can feel the car is in AWD and Ill be driving down the road and, I have not noticed any pattern or method to the madness, but the lights will all go off and the car is no longer in AWD. Curious if anyone has seen this or has any kind of suggestion regarding this issue.

Thanks!

could it be a speed thing?? I think its related because AWD is switched to driver habit ( why have it in AWD on the motorway ) that only costs you more in fuel, just a guess though

You know I thought about that because if I am in the parking lot it seems to be on longer then after I get out on the highway is usually when it goes off.
