Default Rear brakes...

Just failed inspection because of the rear brakes. I had a few questions I'm hoping you guys can help with. They said only the rears were bad.

Should I replace front and rear at the same time?
I hear I should definitely do the rotors as well, is that true?
Can you recommend a kit or at least brand to buy? I have a mechanic busy that will do it for $30 and some beer, I just gotta buy the parts.

If you didn't figure it out, I know nothing about brakes. Thanks in advance guys.

We don't have enough info to be able to answer your question.
Many people always change the rotor whn they do the pads but others only do the pads unless the rotors are damaged.
Rear brakes require a special tool to turn the calipers in when replacing pads. You can do it without the tool but you take the chance of screwing up the calipers.

You don't need a kit - just the parts. I get my Audi parts from force Five in Concord NH

I just changed mine this weekend, i'm no mechanic but i can wield a spanner. There is an Audiworld tech article about the rears, and i can recommend getting the special tool for the caliper piston.

The pistons have to be screwed back in not just pushed so it's a little tricky to do with needle nose pliers. I got mine from harbour freight for about $40. You only need to replace the rotors if they are badly worn or scored.

If your friend has the special tool, i'd say let him do it and sit back with beer and watch
