Default Rear window stuck down

Hi there,

I have a 2004 A6 and the rear window has stuck down and won't go up at all. When you press the swith down you can hear a faint noise but when I press it to go up there is no noise at all.

I have taken the trim off and removed the motor, the window then glides up very smoothly. When I tried the motor on it's own it only goes down, it will not rotate upwards.

Does anyone have any ideas, i am thinking it's the regulator but don't want to buy one for it to be wrong.

Many Thanks

Colin

If you're holding the motor and reg in your hand your way ahead of our physic abilities. Sounds like a motor or switch issue. Do you have power to the motor in forward and reverse? (up and down)

Even if the reg was binding it it would humm for a second before giving up.

Hi,

How do I know whether it is getting a signal to go up?, which wire do I check with my multimeter?

Sounds dumb but rap on that motor with a hammer while holding the switch in the up position. I've seen this problem many times, it has never been the switch. The motor itself is the same for all four doors, the linkage is different but motor is the same. My drivers window went dead, gave it a hammer smack and it worked for a couple days... ended up getting the rear passenger motor from a 2.7t and it's been fine for nearly 2 years.

there are plastic clips that hold the window in the track, if they break (common) they will cause the motor to stay in the stuck down position

also another reason may be broken wiring to the connectors...on older cars the wires rot and break causing an open circuit.

Test the motor by applying battery power directly to the motor contacts

I'll bet it's a break in the wiring or broken window clips which are keeping the window stuck down!

Turn on the rear window safety lock from the driver's switch and see if it goes up.
