I recently bought a 2003 A6 and the guy before me let the washer reservoir freeze. It eventually drains itself onto the ground in 2 -3 days.

I purchased an new reservoir from Audi ( $136 cheap) and I need to install it.

Does anyone know the procedure. ie where to start.

Pull the left front tire off. Remove the inner fender well. There are 2 6mm bolts (10mm head) that hold it in place from the bottom. There is 1 remaining bolt in the engine compartment that holds that and the p/s fluid reservoir. Pumps just pull out. I don't remember about the level sensor, but it should be evident.

 

That's pretty much it, but you can fold the liner back instead of removing the rear fasteners.

 

Thanks guys.....found it was not a cracked reservoir. Just a hose pulled off the headlight washer (left). BTW, I dont have that option (just cover plates over where the washer nozzles should be).

BUT..... the pump, wiring and water tubing is all installed. Even nozzle looking things under the cover trim plates.

All I am missing is a switch on the dash and a couple 'squirters' . Oh well.......

 

It doesn't make sense for Audi to put the complete system in and then fake covers. The headlight washers only work when your headlights are "on", and the same stalk that runs the windshield washers activates them. Just be prepared to go through a lot of fluid -- the headlight washers dump out a lot.

 

I think that the headlight washers where standard equipment. The washers do LOOK like flat plates on your post face-lift car. Stand in front of the car and have someone turn on the headlights and hit the WINDSHIELD washers. The headlight washers should pop up from the bumper and squirt.

 

Headlight washers were standard equipment on my 2003. The cold weather package included front/rear heated seats and ski sack.

 

Yes, the pump for the headlight washers has a huge input compared to the windshield. I tried the pump when I had it dismantled, but did not think of turning on the headlights.

I will try it again. It must use water pressure to raise the nozzle assembly.

Not that I miss them, I had them on my Bonneville and they sucked. You really need headlight wipers......
